Punctuation Marks In English

Punctuation in the English  helps the reader to understand a sentence with the help of visual means other than just the letters of the alphabet.
To get full understanding of basic grammar rules, you also need to know about punctuation rules.Let us see symbols used to represent these punctuation marks and get better idea of them that what they actually are:

  • All sentences must start with a capital, or upper case, letter.
  • Organizations and compass points are capitalized. 
  • Titles of people, books, magazines, movies, specific places, etc. are capitalized. 
  • Every sentence needs a punctuation mark at the end. These would include a period, exclamation mark, or question mark.
  • period is used at the end of a complete sentence that is a statement.
  • Use commas to separate words and word groups in a simple series of three or more items.
  • Semicolons are used to take the place of a conjunction and are placed before introductory words like “however” or “therefore.”  They are also used to separate a list of things if there are commas within each unit.
  • Colons are used to separate a sentence from a list of items, between two sentences when the second one explains the first, and to introduce a long direct quote.
  • Exclamation markused after an interjection or exclamation to indicate strong feelings (Sorrow,shouting), shows emphasis and often marks the end of a sentence.
  • We use a question mark only after a direct question in end of a sentence.
  • Apostrophe is used to show possession.
  •  Double Quotation Mark is used to write someone's word to word speech.
