Parts of Speech Detailed

Definition:


Hello welcome back to all my blog readers as per my promise I am back with a new detailed post on Parts of speech in English.Please follow my blog and share this post with your friends so that it can help them in clearing their doubts, let us start:
  "A part of speech is a class of words based on the word's function, the way it works in a sentence.In traditional English grammar, the parts of speech are: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, and interjection."

Their are eight parts of speech in English grammar, look at the picture below:


So above are are the eight parts of speech in English grammarnow we shall read about all of them.and if you have any question you can ask in comment section of this post.

1. Noun:

Noun is a part of a speech refers to words that are used to name persons,places, things, animals, ideas, feelings or events. Nouns are the simplest among all the parts of speech, which is why they are the first ones taught to students in primary school.


Examples:
Book
Country
India
Sunil
Happiness
Sorrow


There are five different types of nouns namely:

   a) Proper Noun:
         Proper noun is a name of any specific person, place thing etc.For example if we say "a boy"               then it is not a name of any proper person it may be any boy from your class or friends but if             we say "Amit" then it is a name of specific boy.So here in this example "Amit"is proper noun.

    b) Common Noun:

       Opposite to proper noun a common noun is the name of any common man, place,thing or                    idea.For example "a musician" is common noun but if you say "Tansen" then it is a proper noun.

    c) Material Noun:


      This kind refers to nouns which you can perceive through your five senses. 
       Examples: folder, sand, board, sugar, milk etc.

    d) Collective Noun:   



Collective noun refers to a group of persons, animals, or things. 
Example: faculty (group of teachers), herd(group of sheep), class (group of students), pride (group of lions) etc. 


   e) Abstract Noun:        


Unlike material nouns, abstract nouns are those which you can’t be perceived by your five senses. 
Examples: happiness, sorrow, sadness, grudge, bravery, honesty etc.

2. Pronoun:

    A pronoun is a part of a speech which works at the place of a noun. Some examples of pronouns are: I, it, he, she, mine, his, hers, we, they, theirs, and ours etc.

    3. Verb:

    This is the most important part of a speech, for without a verb, a sentence would not exist. Simply put, this is a word that shows an action (physical or mental) or state of being of the subject in a sentence.

  • 4. Adverb:

    Like adjectives, adverbs are also describe to words, but the difference is that adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or another adverb. 

    Adverbs are of four types namely:

    Adverb of Place
    Adverb of Manner
    Adverb of Degree

  • 5. Adjective:




  • This part of a speech is used to describe a noun or a pronoun. Adjectives can specify the quality, the size, and the number of nouns or pronouns. 


    There are 7 types of adjectives in English.These are as follows:

    1. Descriptive
    2. Quantitative
    3. Demonstrative
    4. Possessive
    5. Interrogative
    6. Distributive
    7. Articles

    6. Preposition:

    It helps sometimes to start with examples and pictures.Suppose a Preposition is any word that describes the relationship between a caterpillar and an apple.In the below picture all the prepositions are underlined.

Definition:

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun or some other word in the sentence.


    Now Let us discuss about types of Prepositions:

1. Simple prepositions:

      These prepositions are short words which are used in simple sentences.
      For example: in, off, on, upon, out, under, from etc.

      2. Compound Prepositions:

    These prepositions are made by adding the prepositions in front of a noun, an adjective or an adverb. We use compound prepositions when we join nouns, pronouns and phrases.For example: among, beside, across, without, inside, outside etc.
